With a move to Seattle imminent, this Texas family was hoping to modernize the 1950s-era West Seattle home they’d inherited. In order to take advantage of the natural light and West-facing views, Katahdin worked with an architect to open up the kitchen and main living room, as well as update the bathrooms and finish the basement. Existing panoramic windows were integrated into the new design, which features an open-concept kitchen with a large island, additional seating and living space.
Many of the house’s original details remain, like copper pipes in the ceilings that provide radiant heat. The basement, previously damaged by flooding, was repaired and refinished, a process which uncovered a hidden cold-storage room containing canned goods from the 1950s. Brand new decks on the exterior expand gathering space, and allow the exceptional view to be experienced without the limitations brought about by being indoors.
